Digesting the Indigestible: Microplastic Extraction From Prawn Digestive Tracts

چکیده

Microplastics (MPs) have become ubiquitous in the marine environment, and are likely ingested by a broad cross-section of life. The extent to which organisms ingest MPs is uncertain due limitations analytical methods. Effective identification analysis precursor understand their impact on human consumers. This particularly challenging for crustaceans, chitin present exoskeleton digestive systems, resistant chemical degradation. study presents novel application that can efficiently break down stable organic tissue banana prawns ( Penaeus merguiensis ), subsequently isolate putative MP polymers from tract without damaging integrity. Five treatments were examined capacity prawn system; namely acid, alkaline, oxidant, enzyme microwave assisted oxidant digestion. Gravimetric image revealed gastrointestinal be effectively removed digestion However, testing seven reference (polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), polyester (PES), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rayon) significant degradation when exposed acid Overall, achieved best recovery rate spiked > 90%) with minimal size, shape, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral changes all except rayon. These results highlight new direction removal extraction crustacean ingestion studies.

Microplastic fragments and microbeads in digestive tracts of planktivorous fish from urban coastal waters

We investigated microplastics in the digestive tracts of 64 Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) sampled in Tokyo Bay. Plastic was detected in 49 out of 64 fish (77%), with 2.3 pieces on average and up to 15 pieces per individual. All of the plastics were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Most were polyethylene (52.0%) or polypropylene (43.3%). Most of the plastics were f...

Extraction from prawn shells of substances cryoprotective for Vibrio cholerae.

Substances cryoprotective for Vibrio cholerae were detected from prawn shells immersed in phosphate-buffered saline. This cryoprotective activity was heat resistant and sensitive to treatment with trypsin. For the exhibition of its full activity, the presence of Mg ion was indispensable. The cryoprotective activity of this substance was more active than that of other known cryoprotectants, like...

Extraction, Purification, and Characterization of Trypsin Obtained from the Digestive System of Yellowfin Seabream (Acanthopagrus latus)

The development of the marine aquaculture industry has led to the generation of significant amounts of fish wastes. Marine farm wastes exert adverse effects on the surrounding area of the cages. On the other hand, wastes of fish and other aquatic animals are regarded as major sources of valuable natural bioactive compounds, including enzymes, proteins, bioactive peptides, oil, amino acids, coll...

Bacterial conjugation in the digestive tracts of gnotoxenic chickens.

Escherichia coli K-12 Hfr and F- strains were successively implanted in axenic chicks. Conjugation with exchanges of chromosomal genes occurred with high frequencies in the gut of the chicks and could continue as long as fertile strains coexisted in this environment. Almost all of the expected recombinant types were recovered in the feces under these experimental conditions. Furthermore, these ...

Recovery of Soybean Cyst Nematodes (Heterodera glycines) from the Digestive Tracts of Blackbirds.

Digestive tract contents and feces of blackbirds were examined for cysts of Heterodera glycines, the soybean cyst nematode. Birds fed under laboratory conditions and trapped in naturally-infested fields were checked. Infective larvae were recovered from cysts in the excrement of birds 24 and 48 hr after they were fed cysts. Birds that were force-fed eggs and larvae discharged infective larvae i...
